CCTV-1 is a comprehensive channel. It went into official operation on September 2, 1958. It covers the whole of China by satellite. CCTV-1 is the earliest and most influential channel for CCTV. It broadcasts an average of 20 hours a day.

News on CCTV-1 is broadcast 13 times a day. From morning to evening, domestic and international news events are timely aired, including a series of in-depth reports. The main evening news broadcast at 19:00 is the most popular program, and serves as the major source of information for viewers around China.

CCTV-1 also features TV plays, galas and documentaries, boasting a lot of popular programs, including the annual Spring Festival gala.

Every evening during the quality time for television, CCTV-1 airs domestically-made TV series and documentaries ranging from China's ancient legends to stories of state leaders.

CCTV-1 is the elite channel for the station and is widely known throughout China.
