CCTV-6 is reserved for movies. It went into official operation on January 1, 1996. It covers the country via satellite, and broadcasts an average of 17 hours a day.

CCTV-6 promotes movie and television culture. It broadcasts Chinese and foreign feature films, documentaries, science and educational films, cartoons, operas and TV plays as well as other relevant programs. The films aired have been well received by audiences.

CCTV-6 also participated in the production of a series of movies and documentaries that have won national awards.

CCTV-6 currently has 4 million viewers, and is ranking second among all CCTV's channels.
