Two freighters collided in fog off Japan's eastern coast early this morning (Friday). One Chinese crewmember died and other eight Chinese crewmembers are missing.
The Malta-registered Wei Hang 9 sank, sending its 21 Chinese crewmembers scrambling into lifeboats. The other freighter, under Japanese registration, was just slightly damaged with no crewmembers injured. The Wei Hang 9 was heading for Dalian in the northeast of China, carrying some 4,000 tons of scrap metal. The Japanese Coast Guard has initiated a search and rescue operation for the missing crew.
