A report, based on China's lawmakers' recent inspection of environmental protection efforts in 15 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities has been submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for review. It showed that environmental pollution is still a problem in China.
The report showed that during the past five year, the cost of environmental protection around China reached a total of over 100 billion US dollars. With the increase of energy consumption and production of pollution, the level of environmental pollution in China is still on the up but at a slower rate than before. However, two important targets in environmental protection have not been reached.
NPC standing committee vice chairman Sheng Huaren said:" Lax law enforcement and poor monitoring are the reasons for environmental pollution."
Around 700 Chinese cities and counties experienced acid rain in 2005. One third of China's territory was bathed in acid rain. Sheng also says China will try to establish a nationwide environmental monitoring system by the end of the 11th five-year term, which will provide 24 hour monitoring for some significant areas and rivers.
