China, Germany pledge to further military exchanges

BEIJING, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese military officer said here Saturday that China would like to further develop relations with Germany's Federal Defence Forces.

Liang Guanglie, chief of general staff of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) made the remarks in talks with visiting Inspector General of Germany's Federal Defence Forces Wolfgang Schneiderhan.

Liang told Schneiderhan China-Germany relations have grown smoothly in recent years, with frequent high-level exchange of visits. The two nations have conducted fruitful cooperation on culture and education, economy, science and technology, environmental protection, law and tourism.

The military ties between the two nations have deepened and the mechanism of dialogue and exchange have operated soundly, said Liang, who is also member of China's Central Military Commission.

"China valued the ties with German armed forces," Liang said, adding the further development of the ties will be conducive to the all-round development of relations between the two nations and the two armed forces.

Schneiderhan also hailed the rapid development of bilateral military ties. The exchange of visits between the two defence ministers and top military officers have laid solid foundation for the ties, he said.

The two armed forces have also carried substantial cooperation in professional fields, said the General Inspector. Germany would like to make joint efforts with China to lift the cooperation between the two armed forces to a new height, he said.

Before the talks, Liang hold a welcoming ceremony for Schneiderhan and his party.
