World leaders have openly condemned the DPRK's purported nuclear test.

US President George W. Bush described it as a threat to international peace and security. The US was backed by its ally in London.

Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said Britain will push for sanctions against Pyongyang.

Both Germany and France accused the DPRK of breaking international law.

In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the reported test damaged the process of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. He urged Pyongyang to return to the negotiating process. Russia's Foreign Ministry has called Pyongyang's ambassador to Russia in for consultations, warning him the test could provoke a nuclear arms race in the region.

NATO also weighed in, saying it endangered peace around the world. The 26-nation alliance added that it would call on the DPRK to return to international talks over its nuclear program.
