China-ASEAN summit opens in Nanning

Chinese and ASEAN leaders are holding a summit meeting in China's southern city of Nanning. This is the first time top Chinese leaders and ASEAN members have convened in China.

The leaders posed for photos in a gesture of unity and partnership on Monday afternoon. And Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao extended a warm welcome to the ASEAN leaders. The high-level summit officially marks the 15th anniversary of the dialogue relationship between China and the ASEAN. The summit is expected to enhance mutual political trust and cooperation in safeguarding regional stability. Premier Wen Jiabao spoke at the opening ceremony.

He says the aim of the summit is to review the achievements of China-ASEAN relations over the past 15 years. And work together to chart the course for future cooperation. Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo also spoke during the opening ceremony. She talked about the significance of the China-ASEAN free trade area project. Many participants hope the summit will help to push the project forward. China and ASEAN countries are scheduled to sign a joint statement following the summit meeting.
