The agreement on the DPRK's return to six-party talks was reached after envoys from the DPRK, China and the United States met in Beijing yesterday (TUES). For his part, US Assistant Secretary of State, Christopher Hill, said the next round of talks will address his country's financial restrictions on Pyongyang. He reiterated that the UN Security Council resolution will not be changed.
The US side welcomed the DPRK's agreement to return to negotiations, which came after the three-party meeting in Beijing.
Christopher Hill, US ass’t secretary of state said, “They made it very clear that there were no conditions. But they wanted to hear that we would address the issue of the financial measures in the context of the talks and I said we will be prepared to create a mechanism, a working group and to address the financial issues.”
Gorge W. Bush said, “We'll be sending teams to the region to work with our partners to make sure that the current United Nations Security Council resolution is enforced, but also to make sure that the talks are effective, that we achieve the results we want, which is a North Korea that abandons her nuclear weapons programs and her nuclear weapons in a verifiable fashion in return for a better way forward for her people.”
The six-party talks are expected to resume sometime before the end of the year, possibly even later this month.
