Special Report:   FOCAC

Business contracts have been sealed by dozens of Chinese firms with African governments and companies. They totaled almost two billion dollars.

The signing ceremony was a little crowded, because there was so much business to be done and it was hard to pack it into a two-hour face-to-face meeting.

Some looked anxious as they looked for deals. Some even grabbed the reporters in their search for a middleman. But participants remained positive about the opportunities presented.

Nealy 400 representatives from China and the African business sectors gathered in the ceremony and made a series of cooperation agreements in agriculture, water facilities, constructions, textile, medicine and financial services. The ceremony also saw the establishment of the China-Africa Joint Chamber of Commerce. Chinese entrepreneurs also hailed the events, which are bringing in more business.

Lu Chunming, president of Holleypharm said, “This is a good chance for Africans to know China, that will benefit the local firms who want to work with the Chinese. I believe soon after this, we will see a new tide of cooperation between the two sides.”

The ceremony also marked an end to the two-day Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
