Palestinian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar is calling for an urgent meeting of Arab foreign ministers. He wants to discuss the escalation of Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip.

Zahar is questioning Israel's motives for its military actions in Gaza after meeting with permanent representatives of the Arab League on Monday. He says he will ask Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa to arrange the emergency meeting. Since last week, more than 50 Palestinians have been killed in a series of Israeli air strikes and shelling.

The Israelis say their aim is to stop missile attacks. The Israeli offensive has drawn growing international criticism. But Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says his country's military will press on with its actions.
