Curfew over Saddam sentence

Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

In Iraq, the streets in Saddam Hussein's former hometown of Tikrit were deserted on Monday as a curfew entered its second day. This followed Saddam's death sentence for crimes against humanity. Iraqi soldiers could be seen manning checkpoints on the town's main streets and police vehicles took positions near the governor's office and government buildings.

Members of the Iraqi security forces in the town described the sentence as unfair, calling for humanitarian organizations to intervene. But they said that they would work to keep full control of the town and prevent insurgent attacks until the curfew is lifted. Curfews in Baghdad and other parts of Iraq are expected to be lifted on Tuesday.
