Chinese government supports Margaret Chan

The Chinese government has given its full support to Margaret Chan, in her bid to become Director-general of the World Health Organization.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu made the comments on Tuesday, saying Chan is very capable, experienced, and the right person for the job. Jiang Yu also called on members of the WHO Executive Board to support Hong Kong's former health director.

Chan was the top vote getter as the list of candidates was narrowed from a field of 11 to 5. The four other candidates are from Japan, Mexico, Kuwait and Spain.
