At least 18 members of an extended family, including eight children, have been killed by Israeli tank shells in the northern Gaza Strip. The killings on Wednesday have triggered renewed protests in the area despite an apology from the Israeli military.
The carnage in the border town Beit Hanoun is believed to be the deadliest single Israeli attack on Palestinians in four years.
Some of the dead were killed in bed as shells struck seven houses. The incident was unexpected, as Israeli ground forces have just pulled out of Beit Hanoun after a weeklong operation that's killed at least 52 Palestinians.
Palestinian leaders have declared three days of national mourning.
