Coal mine accidents occur frequently in China in winter due to the increased demand for coal. The major material used for heating most parts of the country. To increase profits, some coal mines try to produce more than they can handle. Officials and experts from the State Administration of Coal Safety warned the industry to improve its industrial work safety record.

Liu Tiemin, head of Academy of Safety Science & Tech, said: "The possibility of big coal mine accidents has always been high at the end of the year."

Huang Yi, spokesman of the State Administration of Safety, said: "Due to the stable safety situation in the nation as a whole, some regions and enterprises have slackened the management. Thus several big accidents emerged recently...We would not only crack down on illegal shafts, but also those which do not have proper standards for safe production, those that pollute the environment or work against industrial rules ... We've asked the local governments to publicize the lists of mines which will be closed by the end of this month."
