Chinese President Hu Jintao and US President Bush agree to further promote relations

Chinese President Hu Jintao and US President George W. Bush have agreed to further promote Sino-US relations. President Hu Jintao said China and the US should strengthen dialogue, mutual trust and cooperation on major global issues and the common interests of humanity.
President Hu Jintao made the remarks during a meeting on the sidelines of the ongoing 14th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting. He said China and the US should continue developing bilateral ties and promoting constructive bilateral cooperation.
Hu Jintao said the Taiwan issue should be properly handled.
He expressed hope that the US side will honor its commitment and not send the wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces, in efforts to safeguard Sino-US strategic interests.
Hu Jintao said the two sides should also strengthen cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region to jointly safeguard and promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
Bush agreed with Hu Jintao concerning strengthening bilateral cooperation in various fields. He said the US is ready to conduct strategic dialogues and exchanges at various levels with China. He added that the US understands the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue and its possible impact on US-China relations. He said US policy on this issue will remain unchanged.
Bush said bilateral economic and trade cooperation is dynamic, and that the US welcomes China's development. He said the US does not worry about competition brought about by China's economic progress.
