China and India established diplomatic ties in April, 1950.

But bilateral ties were challenged by border issues until 1976.

In 1988, Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi visited Beijing.

Gandhi reiterated India's acknowledgement that Tibet is part of China.

Both China and India agreed to solve the border issue with understanding and cooperation.

Indian Prime Minister Narasimha Rao visited China in 1993.

China and India signed 4 documents to maintain border peace.

In 2000, Indian President Nalayanan visited China.

Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee visited China in 2003.

China and India signed 11 documents to strengthen exchanges and cooperation.

In 1996, President Jiang Zemin paid a state visit to India - the first by a Chinese leader.

The two sides agreed to build mutual trust on the border issue and to create a constructive partnership.

Premier Zhu Rongji visited India in 2002, signing 6 documents to boost ties in various fields.

Premier Wen Jiabao visited India in 2005.

China and India issued a joint statement on establishing "strategic and cooperative partnership".

China and India sign accord on border issue.

90 senior Chinese officials have visited India in the first 10 months of this year and vice versa.

China-India trade volume topped US$18.7 billion in 2005.

Up by 146% compared to that in 2003.

Total volume is expected to reach US$23.5 billion in 2006.
