South Korean union workers have rallied to oppose a free trade agreement with the US and demand laws to protect labor. Some 60,000 workers in Seoul and other cities joined the nationwide strike on Wednesday.
In Seoul, protesters marched near city hall. They carried banners and chanted slogans denouncing the agreement. The protest comes less than two weeks before South Korean and American negotiators meet for their fifth round of free-trade talks in the US, to hammer out an accord that would slash tariffs and other trade barriers. The plan has drawn strong resistance from South Korean labor, agriculture and social groups, as well as the film industry.
