Iraq: Leaders call for calm after the latest violence

Special Report: Iraq in TransitionTop Iraqi government officials have held an emergency meeting after the latest violence in the country. Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi called for calm and self-restraint, and urged politicians to work hard to reduce sectarian tensions.
Tariq al-Hashimi, Vice President said, "It is an honest call by wise people and leaders, to take an urgent and responsible stand, and put aside their disagreements and stand for the common national benefit, as a part of their responsibility before God and their people.
Also, we call for a revision of the government's existing security plans for Baghdad to better protect innocent civilians' lives and their livelihoods, and to correct the mistakes in administrating security. There must be a new outlook in this field through the participation of the Political Council for National Security.
What happened today handed everybody a responsibility, and everybody should start looking for an urgent solution for Iraq's problems, and seriously work to build the foundations, state and the rules of law and order."

Iraq's Prime Minister has called for calm, following at least four car bombings and two mortar attacks that killed 153 people in Baghdad. More than two hundred people were also wounded during the attacks on Thursday.
