Rocket fire from the Gaza Strip in Israel died down late Sunday after a daybreak ceasefire. This increases the likelihood that the latest truce may end five months of destruction and open a path toward peace.

The surprise truce took effect from 6 am local time on Sunday. But two major Palestinian militant groups later fired volleys of home-made rockets into Israel. The Al-Quds brigades responded to the cease fire violation by saying that their attacks were in retaliation to Israeli actions in the past.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has instructed Israel's security forces to show restraint and give the cease fire a chance to succeed. Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres also said there was no other way for the Palestinians but to end the violence.

Shimon Peres,Israeli Deputy Prime Minister said,"Finally I believe the Palestinian side none of us has a better alternative."

Meanwhile different Palestinian factions held a meeting late Sunday, where the two main parts of the Palestinian government .Hamas and Fatah, publicly backed the truce.

Ghazi Hamad, Hamas spokesman said,"I think we have overcome the violation they will respect the agreements."

The Israeli military said all troops were out of the Gaza Strip in the hours before the cease fire went into effect.
