Iraq seeks Iran’s help

Iraqi President, Jalal Talabani, has arrived in Tehran. His visit on Monday comes amidst increasingly urgent calls that Washington seek Iran's help to defuse spiraling violence in Iraq.

Talabani's visit also comes as Tehran is trying to assert its role as the top regional power broker to counter Washington's influence in Baghdad. In talks so far, Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has pledged Tehran's support to help improve security in Iraq. Many suspect Iran of backing Shi'ite militias, one of the key players in Iraq's sectarian conflict. But so far, Iran has denied these allegations.
