Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

U.S. President George W. Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki have agreed that Iraq should not be partitioned into separate, semiautonomous zones.

Bush made the remarks after high-stakes talks with the Iraqi Prime Minister in Amman, Jordan today. They agreed that splitting the country into parts is not what the Iraqi people want and any partition of Iraq wuld only lead to an increase in sectarian violence.

Al-Maliki left the door open for countries like Iran and Syria to play a part in Iraq's struggle for peace. He said they are ready to cooperate with everybody who believes that the need to cooperate with the national unity government, especially Iraq's neighbors. Bush and al-Maliki had been set to start meeting on Wednesday, but that opening session was canceled following disclosure of U.S. doubts about theIraqi leader's capabilities and a Baghdad protest of his attendance.
