US Senate confirms Robert Gates as the new Defense Secretary

The US Senate has voted overwhelmingly to confirm Robert Gates as the country's new Secretary of Defense. Members of both parties strongly backed him as the man to replace Donald Rumsfeld, and help overhaul President George W. Bush's Iraq war strategies.

The 95-to-2 vote to approve Gates, coupled with Wednesday's release of an independent study lambasting Bush's approach to the costly conflict, added pressure on the president to rethink his strategy.

Gates has said this week that he does not think the US is winning the war, and conceded that all options to overhaul the administration's current approach must remain on the table.
