The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine has rejected a call by President Mahmoud Abbas for early elections. Abbas made the call for both presidential and parliamentary elections saying national unity talks had failed. But the PFLP faction said new elections would be divisive.

President Abbas said he had tried, but failed to form a unity government. He blamed Hamas for refusing to renounce violence and recognize Israel.

Abbas told officials he would announce his decision to call early elections in a speech later this week.

But the PFLP said this would only exacerbate divisions.

Rabah Mouhana, PFLP spokesman said, "The main reason for failing to form a unity government until now is the harmful duality of two leaders, both Abu Mazen and Ismail Hanniyeh, the harmful duality of two parties, both Fatah and Hamas, and the harmful duality which led to the holding on to positions and titles."

The spokesman called for an urgent start of a national dialogue with all national, political and social parties.
