Special Report: Doha 2006Champions at the Doha Asian Games are among those in China's search for the World's Top 10 athletes. The nominations for the country's most influential sporting award opened in Beijing on Wednesday.
The "World Top 10" launch welcomed representatives of China's top athletes as well as ambassadors from the countries of other nominated figures.
The list includes 30 of the best domestic and international athletes and teams of the year. Top Chinese gymnast Yang Wei, who has made striking progress winning the all-around titles at both the World Championships and Asian Games, is one of the nominees.
Asian Games gold medalist Yang Wei said, "Whatever awards I may win eventually, it will all be down to my efforts in training. The possibility of winning can only encourage me to concentrate on my preparations for Beijing Olympics."
Other nominees include Olympic champions like Liu Xiang, Guo Jingjing as well as winter olympic champions like Han Xiaopeng and Wang Meng. From around the world others like Asafa Powell, Roger Federrer, Michael Shumacher, are also on the list.
Approved by China's State General Administration of Sport, the Awards are organized by China Sports Publications Corporation and "New Sports" Magazine.
The final awards ceremony will take place next April.
