On Tuesday, in a televised speech, the Palestinian prime minister called for an end to the infighting between Hamas and Fatah rivals. He urged the warring factions to focus their attention on Israel. But a Fatah spokesman criticized Haneya's rejection of calls for new legislative elections. He warned that the Palestinian people were slipping into civil war.

Abdullah, cabinet member-Fatah, said, "There are deaths every day, especially in Gaza, between brothers and we have to deal with this much more than having a meeting under the Ministry of the Interior. We need a political decision that there should be no fighting between brothers and that means that we have to transcend to the needs of the people, and that brings us to the second responsibility that he did not answer clearly - that of the sanctions imposed on our people. It's not enough to wish that the sanctions are broken. In reality, they are not."
