The Foreign Ministry has explained China's vote in favor of UN sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program. The Security Council resolution was passed unanimously on Saturday.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said China has always been against the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
He said China does not wish to see further turmoil in the Middle East. But he also stressed that sanctions alone could not resolve the issue, and called on all countries concerned to continue diplomatic efforts and resume negotiations as soon as possible.
Wang Guangya, Chinese ambassador to UN, said, "What China wants to reiterate is that sanctions are not the end but a means to urge Iran to return to negotiations"
