The girl was admitted to a hospital almost a week ago after being diagnosed with the disease. Her death brings the total number of human deaths in Egypt from the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus to nine.

Earlier on Sunday, an Egyptian woman died of the same disease. A regional WHO official says the two women were from the same family.

The official also said the family raised ducks in their home, and the 15-year-old and her brother had slaughtered their entire stock after several ducks fell sick and died.
