Three bombs have gone off in Baghdad after former President Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death. At least 23 civilians were killed on Thursday.

Two roadside bombs exploded in central Baghdad, killing nine civilians and leaving 43 wounded. The blast took place in a busy market in the Bab al-Sharqi neighborhood of the South Gate area. In a separate attack in eastern Baghdad, a car bomb has exploded at a petrol station, killing 12 people and wounding 26.

A further blast aimed at patrolling police missed its target but killed two civilians instead. Four others were wounded in the blast and taken to Yarmouk Hospital.
