Saddam sends his farewell letter

A letter by Iraq's former president, Saddam Hussein, has been posted on the Internet. He said he is giving his life for his country.

In his farewell letter, Saddam said he was giving his life for his country as part of the struggle against unjust nations. He also urged Iraqis to embrace "brotherly coexistence" and not to hate US-led foreign troops.

Baghdad resident, said, "Saddam Hussein's call for unification is a legitimate right as he was the former President of Iraq. He offered himself as a sacrifice for our homeland."

Baghdad resident, said, "Whether you agreed with Saddam or not, all of us call for unity and demand the occupation troops pull out from our country."

Saddam's lawyer has confirmed that the letter posted on Wednesday was authentic, saying it was written by Saddam on November 5, the day he was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.

A top government official, meanwhile, said Saddam's execution could proceed without the approval of Iraq's president.

Saddam is in the midst of a second trial charging him with crimes during a 1987-88 military crackdown on Kurds in northern Iraq.
