The latest French polls suggest Socialist candidate, Segolene Royal, will beat conservative front-runner, Nicolas Sarkozy, in this year's presidential election.
Figures give her 52 percent of the vote if she faces Sarkozy in a second round of voting.
The pair have been running neck and neck in polls, ahead of the first round of voting set for April. Each has promised a clean break with the past. Sarkozy is promoting himself as a stern defender of law and order, while Royal presents an innovative image in her bid to become France's first woman president.
Political analysts believe current president Jacques Chirac is unlikely to seek re-election, after more than a decade in power.
