President Hu Jintao urges Iran to respond to UN

President Hu Jintao has met with the Iranian President's special envoy -- Ali Larijani in Beijing.

During Friday's meeting, President Hu expressed his hope that Iran will make a serious response to Resolution 1737 on the Iranian nuclear issue, adopted by the UN Security Council last December. Zhang Rui has the latest.

President Hu said the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 17-37 to reflect the shared concerns of the international community over the Iranian nuclear issue. And he said China hopes Iran will respond to the resolution in a serious manner.

Hu Jintao also said that China supports the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. And that China wants to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.

President Hu said China has always promoted diplomatic negotiations, as the best way to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue.

He also urged the global community to press ahead with diplomatic efforts to promote an early resumption to talks on Iran's nuclear issue.

President Hu Jintao also spoke highly of China-Iran relations. He said China would join hands with Iran to boost ties and improve bilateral cooperation. And that these efforts would help to foster lasting peace and prosperity for the world.

For his part, Larijani briefed the Chinese president on Iran's stance on its nuclear issue. He also expressed that Iran highly values its ties with China. And that Iran is committed to expanding bilateral cooperation in various areas including in the political, economic, trade, and cultural arenas.
