Japan will upgrade its Defense Agency to a full ministry. The official transition ceremony will be held on Tuesday.
A tablet with the name of the new ministry was unveiled at the agency's headquarters in Tokyo on Monday. Senior Japanese leaders including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Defense Agency director general, Kyuma Fumio, and several former director generals are expected to take part in Tuesday's ceremony.
Japan's Defense Agency was established in 1954, and had restricted powers within Japan's post-war pacifist constitution. Japan has been wanting to upgrading its defense agency for a long time. Its Upper House approved the agency upgrade bill last month.
