50 militants killed in fighting insurgents in Baghdad

US and Iraqi soldiers, backed by American warplanes, battled suspected insurgents for hours on Tuesday in central Baghdad. The Defense Ministry said 50 militants were killed, and 21 captured, including seven foreign Arabs.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki attended a parade to mark the 85th anniversary of the formation of the Iraqi police force. He assured Iraqis that authorities were committing all resources to crush militants in Baghdad.

Also on Tuesday, an Iraqi government spokesman said the leadership would welcome an increase in US troops.
US President George W. Bush is set to announce a decision to send another 20,000 US troops, to bolster forces in Iraq.
