Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal have agreed to make stopping bloodshed between Palestinian factions a priority, and to continue talks on forming a unity government.
Mahmoud Abbas called Sunday's talks with Meshaal in Damascus fruitful.
Meshaal said there are still disagreements between them and internal dialogue would continue in Gaza and the West Bank.
Both leaders rejected a Palestinian state "with temporary borders" as proposed by Israel.
A joint communique read out to reporters said the talks would resume in two weeks.
Earlier on Sunday, the EU High Representative Javier Solana and Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni discussed progress in Israeli-Palestinian relations.
