Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

In central Baghdad, two nearly simultaneous bombs have struck a predominantly Shiite commercial area, killing at least 88 people and wounding over 168.

And a bomb has also killed at least 14 people and wounded 40 others in a market near Baqouba, to the northeast of Baghdad. It's believed to have been a suicide attack on Shi'ite Muslims who had gathered for a religious ceremony.

The first blast occurred when a bomb left in a bag placed among vending stalls went off. It happened in the Bab al-Shaqi area--one of the busiest parts of Baghdad.

The explosion was followed almost immediately by a car bomb just meters away.

Iraqi police sealed off the area, and scores of badly wounded survivors were taken to nearby al-Kindi Hospital.

The explosions came hours after gunmen opened fire and killed a female teacher. She was on her way to work at a girls' school in the mainly Sunni area of Khadra, in western Baghdad.

Still later, two mortar shells hit a primary school in Dora, the dangerous Baghdad neighborhood in the south. The only fatality was a woman waiting to take her child home, but police said eight students were also wounded.
