The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has passed a symbolic resolution against President George W. Bush's plan to boost American troop levels in Iraq.

It came just one day after Bush's State of the Union address, where he urged lawmakers and the American public to give his Iraq escalation plan a chance.

The Democratic-controlled Senate Foreign Relations Committee dismissed Bush's plans to increase troops in Iraq as "not in the national interest".

The vote on the non-binding measure was 12-9 and largely along party lines.

The Chairman of the Committee, Joseph Biden, insisted the measure was not an attempt to "embarrass" the president.
