Mortar shells rained down on a girls' secondary school in a mostly Sunni area of western Baghdad, killing five pupils and wounding 20.
Later, in Sadr City, a car bomb exploded at an intersection near an outdoor market, killing at least four people and wounding 39 others. At least seven other people died in a series of bombings and shootings across the capital, mostly in Shiite areas.
