EU-wide ban on smoking causes debate

The European Union has launched a debate that could lead to a EU-wide ban on smoking in public places. This follows similar bans already imposed by several European countries.

The EU Health Commissioner unveiled a discussion paper promoting a ban on smoking in work places, including restaurants and bars. The EU Health chief says opinion polls show that a large majority of Europeans are in favor of a total ban on smoking in public places.

After a debate involving national authorities, as well as industry and consumer groups the EU's executive body is expected to propose EU-wide legislation next year. Anti-smoking organizations say tobacco-related diseases kill 650,000 Europeans each year.
