Smoke rises from the site where a U.S. helicopter
allegedly crashed near the town of Zarqa, north of
the central Iraqi city of Najaf, Jan. 28, 2007.

For the first time, the US military command has publicly acknowledged that four US helicopters that crashed in Iraq since January 20 were probably shot down.

Major General William Caldwell said the investigations are incomplete, but it does appear the cause was ground fire. Caldwell said it's unclear whether the findings represent any new threat to US military aviation.

One helicopter went down on Friday near Taji, killing two US soldiers. Another crashed last Sunday near Najaf, and a Black Hawk went down in Diyala province.
