US President George W. Bush has sent a 2.9 trillion dollar budget to the Democratic-controlled Congress.

Bush's plan allocates billions more to fight the war in Iraq. While it squeezes the rest of the government to meet the President's goal of eliminating the deficit in five years.

Democrats widely attacked the plan, which was released on Monday. And even a prominent Republican said it faced bleak prospects. The request for more military funding comes as Democrats are increasingly at odds with the President's plans for Iraq.

While some in the Democratic party have called for Congress to cut off funding for the war, Democratic leaders insist that is not an option. Still, Bush faces an uphill battle with Congress over a spending plan that boosts money for defense and cuts funding for many domestic programs.
