Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

Violence raged through Baghdad on Monday just as an Iraqi general took charge of security in the capital, and Iraqi police and soldiers manned new roadblocks. This marks the start of a long-anticipated joint Iraqi and US operation to curb sectarian bloodshed.

At least 38 people died in bomb and mortar attacks across the city on Monday.

The violence reflects the difficulty facing almost 100,000 American and Iraqi troops and police as they try for the third time in nine months to restore order in the capital.

A bomb placed in a trash can killed at least eight people and wounded 18 in a central Baghdad neighborhood shortly after noon on Monday.

The blast, in the Al-Amana district, also set fire to several civilian cars.
