Shi'ite cleric Abdul Aziz al-Hakim has called for talks between Iran and the United States during a visit to the presidential office in Tehran.
The leader of the Supreme Assembly of Islamic Revolution in Iraq says dialogue between Tehran and Washington would benefit the region.
The US says it is ready for talks with Iran, if it first halts its uranium enrichment process the part of Tehran's nuclear program that most worries the West, as it could be used to make atomic warheads.
Iran rejects such a precondition insisting that its enriched uranium is only made to fuel power stations.
