Turkmenistan´s new president sworn in

Turkmenistan's new president has been sworn in. Acting leader Kur-ban-guly Ber-dy-muk-hame-dov took office today in the Central Asian country after being declared the winner of the February 11th election.

Berdymukhamedov won Sunday's election with 89 percent of the vote.

Berdymukhamedov pledged to the People's Assembly that he would continue the policies of late president Saparmurat Niyazov.

He says Turkmenistan will maintain its neutrality and honor international commitments. He also says the country, which has huge natural gas and oil reserves, will continue exporting energy to other countries.
