Israel is on high alert as tension grows over excavation work around an Islamic Holy site. Police arrested several Palestinians around Jerusalem, trying to curb a swell of unease. The arrests come after a week of fierce clashes.
3,000 Israel police deployed around the Al Aqsa mosque compound. Friday prayers at the site were gathering, protesting the Israeli excavation there. The Chief of Israeli police says his remain on high alert.
Moshe Karadi, Israeli chief of police, said, "Although we presume it will be quiet due to relative calm in recent days, we are prepared for the worst but hope it will not happen."
Clashes occurred despite the security. Men threw stones toward police positions. A Muslim who attempted to enter the compound was arrested and detained.
The Israelis are building a replacement for a centuries old ramp damaged in a 2004 snowstorm. Muslims say the excavations threaten the foundations of the Aqsa mosque -- one of Islam's holiest sites. There've been angry protests. The issue poses new obstacles to peaceful progress in the bitter and enduring standoff between Israelis and Palestinians.
