Abbas wins France´s support for new Palestinian unity gov´t

France is the last stop on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas four-country European tour to win support for the new Palestinian coalition government. He met French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy.

French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy's promise to work with a government including Hamas and the moderate Fatah party was a highlight of Abbas' four-country, European trip this week.

Even though other European leaders were more cautious, the French Foreign Minister was more outright in supporting the agreement to form a new Palestinian coalition government.

Philippe Douste-Blazy, said, "This agreement involves a process that will lead to the recognition of Israel from all the Palestinian sections, including Hamas. So we see in this agreement an important step for Hamas to accept the principal issue of the Quartet which is our goal."
