Israeli soldiers have killed one Palestinian and wounded another in the West Bank town of Nablus. It was the second day of a raid to hunt down militants. But, Palestinian officials warn that Israel's actions could threaten new peace efforts.
Israeli troops sealed off the center of Nablus' old city on Monday. They then moved from apartment to apartment, in search of seven members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a militant offshoot of the Palestinian faction, the Fatah movement.
42-year-old Anan al-Teibi was the first casualty when a bullet struck his neck while he was at home in the old city. Another Palestinian man was injured when Israeli soldiers opened fire on what they thought were "suspicious figures".
Palestinian officials say the offensive threatens efforts to restart peace negotiations and undermines efforts being made to sustain the ceasefire with Israel.
Ismail Haneya said, "The Palestinian government condemns the Israeli criminal campaign on the city of Nablus, that they have called 'Warm Winter'. It's affected people from all walks of life, with curfews, detention operations, and by bursting into houses, frightening children and women and closing down associations."
The Nablus operation began before dawn on Sunday. Palestinian security officials say 30 people have been arrested by the Israeli troops since the raid began.
