KHARTOUM, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Khartoum on Wednesday morning for a two-day visit to Sudan.
The Iranian leader was greeted by Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir at the airport.
This has been the first visit by Ahmadinejad to the largest African country since he took office in August 2005.
The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1974 but severed the ties in 1982 after a war erupted between Iran and Iraq. The diplomatic relations between Khartoum and Tehran were restored in 1986.
Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami visited Khartoum in October 2004, becoming the first Iranian head of state to visit Sudan.
President el-Bashir paid a three-day visit to Iran last April.
