Israeli forces accused of human rights abuses during Nablus raid

Israeli Defense Forces are facing accusations of human rights abuses against Palestinian civilians during a week long operation in the West Bank city of Nablus.

AP Television News has shown footage of a Nablus resident being held at gunpoint by Israeli forces during a house-to-house sweep. Sameh Amira says he was forced to be a "human shield" and ordered to open drawers and wardrobes in the houses. The Israeli Information Center has acknowledged the action is illegal.

But a spokesman for the Israeli Defense Forces has denied there was any illegal use of the civilian population. Israel's Supreme Court banned the use of Palestinian civilians as human shields especially to search homes for explosives or militants.
