Germany: Beck criticizes US missile defense plan

A leader of Germany's governing Social Democrats, Kurt Beck is criticizing US plans to locate a missile defense system in Eastern Europe.

He says that all efforts are needed to "prevent a new arms race". Beck made the comments before a private conference on European security in Berlin. He also says that new rockets never bring about more security, and therefore Germany needs to work on the disarmament process.

Kurt Beck, social democrats leader, said, "Current discussions on the defense system show exactly what kind of danger exists. We have to take this seriously. The issue belongs to the bodies of the EU and NATO to discuss. Naturally the issue needs to be discussed with Russia bilaterally with the USA, jointly between the EU, the USA and Russia and NATO needs to employ its contacts in the discussion."
