Chinese, Russian presidents vow to strengthen strategic partnership

In Moscow, the Chinese and Russian presidents Hu have promised more co-operation to promote their strategic partnership. Hu Jintao and Vladimir Putin also took part in the opening of the "Year of China in Russia" at the Kremlin.
The presidents said in a joint statement that cooperation between China and Russia has been developing smoothly since the two countries forged the strategic partnership of cooperation 10 years ago, bringing tangible benefits to the people.
Both presidents said the continued strengthening of Sino-Russian cooperation is conducive to safeguarding peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world.
China and Russia will boost mutual support on major issues concerning sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russian reaffirmed its firm support for the Chinese government on the issues of Taiwan and Tibet.
With an eye on the future, the two sides pledged to promote mutual trust and enhance cooperation in politics.
They also agreed to deepen cooperation in economics, science and technology and security.
At the opening of the "Year of China", President Hu praised the "Year of Russia" in China in 2006. Then he expressed hopes for the success of the current friendship year.
Hu Jintao, said, "200 events covering politics, economic, science and culture will be held in Russia. We expect these activities to display China's history and culture, and its achievements and process of opening and reform to the Russian people. We also expect the theme year to enhance the understanding between the two countries and their peoples and strengthen cooperation and exchange in various areas."
Putin also hailed the success of the "Year of Russia" in China, saying the decision to mark theme years is strategically significant.
President Hu Jintao arrived in Moscow Monday for a three-day state visit.
